What is PREPS?PREPS is a joint initiative from nineteen of the UK's leading publishers. Together, these companies have set up a database to hold technical specifications and details of the pulps and forest sources for each of the papers they use. Based on this information each paper will be awarded a grade of 1-5 stars using the Egmont Grading System©. This considers whether material has been legally harvested (or recycled) and how the forest sources have been managed. PREPS members will be able to share this information and take it into account when making buying decisions. Ultimately, the way in which each member uses this resource will be at their own discretion. To find out more about how PREPS works, including details of the Egmont Grading System© and the Country Risk Assessment, please take a look at the PREPS Process Document. The report from the recent PREPS Stakeholder Survey is available to download here. The PREPS External Review 2009 is available to download here. "An area of tropical rainforest the size of England and Wales is cleared every year for cattle ranching, soy and palm oil production and, of course, to feed the world's pulp and paper mills. We understand that paper supply chains can be long and complicated, making it hard for end users to identify the forests sources that went into making their paper. We are delighted to see that so many leading members of the UK publishing industry recognise that this is an issue and have come together within PREPS to tackle it. Collectively these major companies, many with a global reach, can really start to influence the actions of the pulp and paper making sector."
